Wayne State University is a state-supported urban university having an
enrollment of more than 30,000 students, including more than
10,000 graduate and professional
students. The university is located on a large modern campus in
the heart of
Detroit's Cultural Center, adjacent to the Detroit Institute of
Arts, the main
branch of the Detroit Public Library, the Center for Creative
Studies, and
several other museums and institutes.
The Department of Mathematics undergraduate program supplies the mathematical preparation necessary for students specializing in the sciences, in business administration, in engineering, and in education. We offer both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees for Mathematics majors. Unlike most major research universities, we deliberately avoid large lecture sections (30 is a typical class size) and have created a number of special programs designed to increase the number of students who succeed and excel in Mathematics. The Wayne State Mathematics Department offers broad programs of graduate study leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in pure and applied mathematics and in statistics. Teaching assistantships, fellowships, research assistantships and several housing allowances are available for qualified students. The Mathematics Department graduate faculty is actively engaged in research in a wide range of areas. Interaction between faculty and graduate students are traditionally informal and an excellent faculty-student ratio helps to insure that our students receive much individual attention and direction.
